Former Director of the Engineering [Retired 2011]

Olga D. González-Sanabria serves as Director of Engineering at the NASA Glenn Research Center in Cleveland, Ohio. Her government service spans 28 years. In this capacity, González-Sanabria is responsible for planning, organizing, and directing a full range of integrated services including engineering design and development, fabrication, systems engineering and integration, and systems analysis. The Directorate is comprised of a workforce of over 400 engineers, technicians, and support personnel.

Prior to her current position, González-Sanabria served as Director of the Engineering and Technical Services Directorate planning, organizing, and directing a full range of integrated services including engineering, fabrication, testing, facility management, and aircraft services, and maintains overall responsibility for Plum Brook Station for the Center. She also served as Director of the Systems Management Office where she supported the development of Center level strategic processes, implementation planning, and decision guidelines for program direction and resource allocation.

González-Sanabria began her NASA career at NASA’s Glenn Research Center in 1979. Other positions she has held at Glenn include chief of Glenn’s Plans and Programs Office and executive officer to Glenn’s Center Director. In the Plans and Programs Office, she provided integration of the Center’s aeronautics and space programs. As executive officer, she was responsible for assisting the Center Director in planning, organizing and managing Glenn’s institutional and technical programs. She has experience as a project manager and a researcher and has had work assignments at other NASA Centers including Headquarters, providing her a comprehensive view of the Agency.

Educational Background:

González-Sanabria was born in Puerto Rico. She received her bachelor of science from the University of Puerto Rico and her master of science from the University of Toledo, both in chemical engineering. She is a patentee in her field and has authored/co-authored over 30 technical reports and presentations for journals and conferences.

Awards & Recognitions:

She received numerous prestigious NASA awards including the NASA Medal for Outstanding Leadership (2002), NASA Exceptional Service Medal (1993), and R&D 100 Award (1988).

2006 – Presidential Rank Award

2004 – HENAAC Technica magazine’s (Winter 2004 edition) cover story with her husband Rafael Sanabria – “NASA Glenn’s Dynamic Duo”

2003 – Inducted to the Ohio Women Hall of Fame

2000 – Women of Color in Technology Career Achievement Award
